STATE OF MINNESOTA CERTIFIED FOOD PROTECTION MANAGER 

ServSafe® Certification
•    National program through the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation.
•    Requires 8-hours of course instruction (either online or in-person).
•    Requires successful passage of an in-person proctored exam.
•    Participants are certified through the national program for five years.
•    There is no "re-certification" for the national program; you must take the class again every five years.

 

State of Minnesota Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM)
•    Through the Minnesota Department of Health.
•    Minnesota CFPM requirements are fulfilled through the Servsafe® program.
•    Apply for a Minnesota Food Protection Manager Certificate upon completion of Servsafe® course and exam passage.
•    Minnesota's certification is good for three years.
•    A four hour re-certification class (with no exam) is required for renewal of the state certificate.

What is the certification class like?
It's a full-day class, with instruction from 8am to 4pm plus a two hour time block for the exam from 4pm to 6pm. The instructor will review all the concepts in the book. Lunch is not included. Please arrive by 7:45am to check in.

 

Can I just take the test and not attend the class?
NO. The National Restaurant Association and the Minnesota Department of Health require instruction either by attending the class in-person or online.

 

How do I register for the online course?
Call (651) 778-2400. The online course only includes the instruction portion of the class; the exam must be taken in-person. An exam date will be provided when you call to register. Once you begin the online course, you have 90 days to complete. All purchases are final, no refunds.

 

What is the re-certification class like?
Re-certification is a half-day class, 8am to noon, there is no exam. A copy of the ServSafe® Manager text book (7th edition) may be purchased by calling (800) 765-2122 or visiting www.servsafe.com. Please arrive at 7:45am to check in. You will need to know the expiration date your Certified Food Protection Manager certification when you register.

 

In what languages is ServSafe® offered?

Classroom instruction is available through Hospitality Minnesota in English. The online class is available in English, Spanish and Chinese. Additional languages for the exam are available by request. Call (651) 778-2400 or email servsafe@hospitalitymn.com.

 

If the class is full, can I be put on a waiting list?
We do not offer a wait list, but we will be happy to schedule you for the next available class.

 

Can I register over the phone?
We can take your registration over the phone; please have a credit card available. The online course registration can only be done over the phone.

 

I can't make it to the class I signed up for. . .can I reschedule?
Yes, with a $45 rescheduling fee, paid in advance. In order to reschedule, you must call at least a day ahead of class. Otherwise, you will have to re-register as a new participant and pay the full cost of the class again.

 

I registered one of my employees for the class, but they have since left their position. Can I get a refund?
The registration fee is non-refundable, but you are welcome to send a different employee to take that class instead. If you find a replacement after the class is held, you may still substitute them, but you will need to pay the $45 rescheduling fee.

 

Someone else was signed up to go to the class, but can't go now. Can we send someone else to the class? 
Yes, we just need to have the name of the new person. You are responsible for getting the book to the new person.

 

Does this certificate qualify for my county's requirements?
Check with your county health department.

When does my CFPM expire?
In Minnesota, the certificate is good for three years.

 

My CFPM is expired. Do I have to take the full-day class again?
Yes. There is no longer a "grace period" for renewals. You must take the class BEFORE your certificate expires. The re-certification paperwork and payment must be submitted within six months of expiration.

 

How do I find out my grade?
You can check your grades online www.servsafe.com about 10 days after the exam. You will need to know the class date and exam session number (included in your packet of information from the class). If you provided your email address, ServSafe® will notify you when the grades are posted. You are responsible for downloading and printing your own ServSafe® certificate (free) or you can pay $10 to have a copy mailed to you.

 

How hard is the certification exam?
It depends on how much you have studied. We have an excellent passage rate among our participants.

 

How many questions are on the exam?
The exam has 90 questions; however there are 10 pilot questions that are for research purposes only.

 

What is considered a passing grade?

A passing score is 75% or higher. This is obtained by answering at least 60 out of 80 questions correctly.

What if I do not pass the exam?

You can retest if you did not pass the examination. You may take the examination twice within 30 days. If you don’t pass your second attempt, you must wait at least 60 days from your most recent attempt before taking the exam again. No more than four attempts are allowed within a 12 month period.

Employers

If your employee provided their email address on the exam, ServSafe® will notify them directly when the grades are posted.
