Parasole has been involved with this association for over 40 years. In the beginning, when communication methods were rudimentary, the organization was a way to connect with fellow restaurateurs to network, build personal and professional relationships as well as develop strategy for policy. Although that is also true today, information exchange is now a click away.
As business owners, we need to stay on top of legislative initiatives, current trends, and vital information which impacts our daily operations. Hospitality Minnesota keeps its members informed of what’s happening as it happens. We are briefed on issues with weekly updates (more if necessary). The team of Hospitality Minnesota is available to answer questions, alert members when a call to action is needed, and guide us on best practices for implementing change. Along with the sense of urgency in communication, the organization provides many opportunities for its members. Events such as, “Day at the Capitol” have taught individuals how to navigate our legislative buildings and how to contact and discuss important issues in our industry with our policy makers. We (Parasole) have taken hundreds of managers to meet with their senators and representatives. Not only does that help our common interests, but it also develops confidence in our managers.
Another aspect of Hospitality Minnesota that is vital to our industry is building a solid future for the industry we love. Finding the workforce to ensure this future is forged through the Hospitality Minnesota Education Foundation. ProStart and Hospitality Management, are two industry career building programs that are part of many high schools across the state and the nation. Getting students excited about our industry is vitally important.
Being part of a group is truly more effective than trying to “go it alone”. Advocacy and political clout is particularly important in the turbulent times we face. Keeping abreast on changing laws and regulations requires paying attention to what is being done at City Hall and on the “Hill”. We, as restaurant operators, do not have the time to devote to keeping up with the rapid pace of change. Its comforting to know we have someone who can make sense of it all.
Being a member, gives you access to information involving legislative issues in real time. As an organization, the power of numbers is important when trying to influence public policy. You are given the template and the information on how to engage with civic leaders. There are connections to vendors and products which keep you current on ideas, innovation, and trends You will meet interesting and fun people who enrich your life, both personally and professionally. I frequently call co-members for their point of view on an issue…..I have met so many people whom I respect and admire. There are opportunities for development and leadership which I personally endorse. If you become a member volunteer and become involved! You will get far more out of the experience.
