Since 2008 HMEF has awarded over $711,000 in Scholarships to 313 students pursuing post-secondary education for careers in foodservice, lodging, tourism and hospitality management. The scholarships were provided through the generosity of Minnesota hospitality operators.
The scholarship recipients plan for careers as restaurant owners and managers, chefs, caterers, bakers, hotel and resort general managers, event planners and many other roles.

Bill & Mary Jo Morrissey Memorial Scholarship
Morrissey Hospitality Companies is a collection of market leading hotels, restaurants and sports & entertainment venues, providing management, development and consulting services. This scholarship is proudly presented in honor of our founders - Bill and Mary Jo Morrissey - who collectively committed their lives, passion and talents to their families - their family of brands, businesses, people and children. They both battled the dreaded disease of cancer with the same hope, love, enthusiasm, optimism and concern for others in which they lived life…a testament to their philosophy of “authentic hospitality.”
Blue Plate Restaurant Company Scholarship
David Burley and Stephanie Shimp were two servers working together at The Nicollet Island Inn in the 1990s, honing their skills at one of the Twin Cities’ premier restaurant/hotels. They formed a simple business plan and in 1993 opened the Highland Grill. Other locations now include the Groveland Tap, Edina Grill, Longfellow Grill, , 3 Squares, The Lowry, The Freehouse, Mercury Dining Room and Rail and Shindig Event Space, as well as the Blue Barn at the Minnesota State Fair.
CSM Lodging Scholarships
CSM Lodging develops, acquires and manages fine hotels and continually delivers outstanding guest service. They have earned Marriott’s prestigious Developer of the Year Award two years in a row, the Marriott Hotel of the Year Award three times, the Marriott Hotel Conversion of the Year Award and the Country Inn by Carlson Developer of the Year Award.
Carlson Family Foundation Scholarship
The Carlson Family Foundation has a strong tradition of giving rooted in the philosophy of its founder, Curtis L. Carlson. Curtis and Arleen Carlson fostered a sense of community and a spirit of giving in their family, establishing a legacy of philanthropy. “Whomever you serve, serve with caring.” The organization is an HMEF Leaders Fund Gold Sponsor.

Greater Minneapolis Hotel Association Scholarships
The Greater Minneapolis Hotel Association partners with the Hospitality Minnesota Education Foundation to provide financial support towards the development and growth of the Hospitality & Tourism Management Program in Minnesota high schools.
Hazellewood Grill & Tap Room Scholarship
The Hazellewood Grill & Tap Room is a neighborhood gathering place in Tonka Bay. This scholarship is given by Chef Scott Foster and Patrick Woodring in honor of the restaurant’s customers and staff. Scott and Pat operate Nova Restaurant Group, which also runs Tavern 4&5 in Eden Prairie, Hazelwood Food and Drink in Bloomington, as well as Chester’s Kitchen & Bar, La Vetta Bar Nel Cielo, Pescara and Terza Ristorante all located in Rochester.
Mihajlov Family Scholarship
It is the preference of the family, that the Mihajlov Family HMEF Scholarship be awarded to an individual in need of financial support in order to complete their post-secondary education in Culinary Arts or Hospitality Management with the intent of preparing for a career in culinary arts or restaurant management.
Minnesota Restaurant Association Hall of Fame Scholarship
The Minnesota Restaurant Association helps the industry thrive by providing advocacy, insight, education, networking and access to services and resources. The MRA has served the needs of the industry since 1933 and has more than 2,000 restaurants in membership and 300 Allied (vendor/ supplier) members. The MRA presents this scholarship in honor of its 29 Minnesota Hospitality Hall of Fame inductees.
Patrick Murray Memorial Scholarships
Since 1946, Murray’s Restaurant in downtown Minneapolis has presented a menu with exceptional choices and its special focus on beef has received the greatest accolades. Murray’s famed “Silver Butter Knife Steak” has become a tradition for locals and made the restaurant a destination for travelers. The scholarship is presented in memory of Pat Murray, the second generation “restaurateur extraordinaire” by the Murray family.

Sysco is a leading marketer and distributor of food and foodservice products. TPI Hospitality Scholarships
TPI Hospitality develops, builds and manages hotels and restaurants throughout greater Minnesota and Florida. Scholarships presented by TPI Hospitality are intended for students enrolled in a hospitality management program with plans to pursue a career in the hotel or restaurant industry.
Toby Tournament Scholarships
The Toby Foundation organized a charity golf tournament in 1985 in honor of Toby Landgraf. The tournament’s proceeds provide scholarship opportunities for hospitality students. The tournament has raised over $500,000 since 1985 and has assisted over 400 hospitality college students from Minnesota.
Torke Coffee Roasting Company Scholarship
Torke Coffee Roasting Company imports, roasts and distributes coffees, including fair trade and organic, from around the world. Torke coffees are fresh roasted and delivered, directly from the roaster, to restaurants and hotels throughout the state.

White Bear Country Inn - Rudy’s Redye Grill Scholarship
The Best Western Plus White Bear Country Inn in White Bear Lake features 89 rooms, meeting facilities for 350 and includes dining in Rudy’s Redeye Grill. Rudy’s Rooftop has been named one of the “Twin Cities Best Rooftops.” The hotel is a pillar of its community, supporting a wide range of events and causes.
