The Hospitality & Tourism Management Program (HTMP) introduces high school students to the lodging industry through classroom learning, real-work experiences and field trips.

The curriculum, developed by the American Hotel & Lodging Association Educational Institute, covers front office and housekeeping management, marketing and sales, food and beverage, as well as general management and leadership skills.

Currently, Minnesota has this program in 13 schools with over 250 students involved.

Pillager High School

Pillager High School teacher Ann Hutchison has been named Hospitality and Tourism Management Program Educator of Excellence. Hutchison has been a business, hospitality and work experience instructor at Pillager for 31 years. She also serves as the ProStart team coordinator. She has taught hospitality management for more than 20 years and incorporated the HTMP programinto her curriculum four years ago. She creates many opportunities for hands-on experience in the industry, and as a result, several students move directly into the workforce. Hutchinson has guest speakers share their knowledge in her classroom, and students participate in six rotations at Grand View Lodge working in house-keeping, convention services, front desk, grounds/golf/maintenance and food/beverage. She also has her students tour other nearby hospitality operations.
